The United Kingdom ratified the Convention on 31 July 1998, and the Convention entered into force for the United Kingdom on 1 March 1999. On 26 August 1999, the United Kingdom submitted its initial transparency report which indicated that there were areas under the United Kingdom’s jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines are known or suspected to be emplaced. In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, the United Kingdom undertakes to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 March 2009.
