Co-ordinating Committee : Background

The Second Meeting of the States Parties in 2000 recognized that the work of the Standing Committees would require a high degree of coordination between the Co-Chairs to ensure that their work would facilitate the successful implementation of the Convention. In this context the States Parties established a Co-ordinating Committee, which will meet on an ad hoc basis under the chairmanship of the current President of the Meeting of the States Parties.

The Third Meeting of the States Parties in 2001 recognized the value and importance of the Co-ordinating Committee in the effective functioning and implementation of the Convention. In addition, States Parties agreed that the President, as chairperson of the Co-ordinating Committee, would report on its functioning to the intersessional meetings and also to the annual meetings of States Parties.

The Fourth Meeting of the States Parties in 2002 again recognized the value and importance of the Co-ordinating Committee in the effective functioning and implementation of the Convention and for operating in an open and transparent manner. In addition, States Parties requested that the Co-ordinating Committee, in a manner consistent with its mandate, continue to be practical-minded and apply the principle of flexibility with respect to the format of Standing Committee meetings, and their sequencing and respective time allocation, continue with its practice to make available summary reports of its meetings on the website of the GICHD, and, requested the President, as Chair of the Co-ordinating Committee, to continue to report on the Co-ordinating Committee’s functioning.
