Guinea-Bissau has become the latest country to declare that it has cleared all known mined areas according to its obligations under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, or Ottawa Convention.

On 2-3 December 1997, representatives of over 100 States gathered in Ottawa to sign the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction. In doing so, these States expressed their determination to put an end to the suffering and casualties caused by anti-personnel mines.
