Malawi acceded to the Convention on 13 August 1998, and the Convention entered into force for Malawi on 1 March 1999. On 9 April 2003, Malawi submitted its initial transparency report which indicated that there were areas under Malawi’s jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines are known or suspected to be emplaced. In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, Malawi undertook to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 March 2009. On 27 November 2008, Malawi reported to the Ninth Meeting of the States Parties that it had fulfilled its obligation under Article 5 of the Convention. |
