On 10 May, the FYR of Macedonia destroyed a previously unknown stockpile of more than 1,200 PFM-1S anti-personnel mines, further demonstrating its commitment to the Convention and to the Cartagena Action Plan.

On 2-3 December 1997, representatives of over 100 States gathered in Ottawa to sign the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction. In doing so, these States expressed their determination to put an end to the suffering and casualties caused by anti-personnel mines.
