What will happen at the 9MSP ?

A draft programme for the 9MSP was distributed on 2 April 2008 and presented to the 6 June 2008 Meeting of the Standing Committee on the General Status and Operation of the Convention. The Co-Chairs of this Standing Committee deemed it acceptable for adoption at the beginning of the 9MSP. Some of the main features of this programme are the following:

  • Time will be allocated to the consideration of requests submitted under Article 5 of the Convention. States Parties that have submitted an extension request in accordance with Article 5 will be provided with the opportunity to present their request to all States Parties.
  • States Parties and observers will be encouraged to engage in a general debate to share views on the matter of extension requests.
  • In keeping with past practice, time will be allocated for the consideration of the General Status and Operation of the Convention. This will feature thematic discussion and updates along the lines of the main subject headings in the Nairobi Action Plan.
