Guatemala acceded to the Convention on 26 March 1999, and the Convention entered into force for Guatemala on 1 September 1999. On 2 March 2001, Guatemala submitted its initial transparency report which indicated that there were areas under Guatemala’s jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines are known or suspected to be emplaced. In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, Guatemala undertook to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 September 2009. On 29 November 2005, Guatemala reported that it had fulfilled its obligation under Article 5 of the Convention.
