Myanmar high level engagement

In the context of the European Union Council Decision 2017/1428, Special Envoy of the Convention HRH Prince Mired Raad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan led a High Level Task Force to Myanmar from 28-30 May 2018, engaging with senior Myanmar officials on the Convention and its norms.

During the visit, Prince Mired H.E. Lt. Gen. Sein Win, Union Minister for Defense and his team which included among others Brigadier General Aung Kyaw Hoe, Permanent Secretary of Defense.

In addition, the Task Force met with Myanmar mine action partners. This included the Delegation of the European Union and Member States Czech Republic, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In addition, the Task Force met with Australia, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland, as well as international organisations ICRC and UNICEF. The latter, is also the co-Chair of a national Mine Risk Working Group that involves the work of 10 ministries and 28 international and non-governmental organisations.

The Task Force also met with representatives of non-governmental organisations leading mine action and victim assistance activities in Myanmar including Humanity and Inclusion, the Myanmar Campaign to Ban Landmines, the Myanmar Physically Handicapped Association – to which the Task Force also paid a visit; and of mine clearance operators, DCA, DDG, HALO Trust and MAG.

On 28 May, Special Envoy Prince Mired of Jordan met with some of Myanmar's mine action partners including the EU Delegation, New Zealand, Norway and Unicef.

The universalization Task Force also met with other international and non-governmental organisations working in victim assistance, non-technical survey and mine risk education in Myanmar including Humanity and Inclusion, HALO Trust, MAG, DDG and DCA.
