Argentina signed the Convention on 4 December 1997, ratified it on 14 September 1999, with the Convention entering into force for Argentina on 1 March 2000.
Obligations under the Convention
In its initial transparency report submitted 31 August 2000, Argentina reported stockpiled anti-personnel mines under its ownership or possession or under its jurisdiction or control.
Notwithstanding the obligation to destroy all stockpiled anti-personnel mines, the Convention permits the retention of the minimum number of anti-personnel mines absolutely necessary for the development of and training in mine detection, mine clearance, or mine destruction techniques.
In its transparency report submitted in 2019, Argentina reportedit had destroyed all anti-personnel mines it had retained under Article 3, destroying the last 212 in 2018.
In its transparency report submitted on 13 April 2004, Argentina reported that as of4 December 2003, it had completed the destruction of all stockpiled anti-personnel mines.
In total, Argentina reported having destroyed 99,968 mines.
In its initial transparency report, Argentina reported areas under its jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines were known or suspected to be emplaced.
In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, Argentina undertook to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 March 2010.
On 27 April 2009, Argentina submitted a request to extend its mine clearance deadline. The request was granted at the Cartagena Summit on a Mine Free World and a new deadline set for 1 January 2020.
On 19 March 2019, Argentina submitted a second request to extend its mine clearance deadline. The request was granted at the Fourth Review Conference of the States Parties, Oslo, Norway, and a new deadline set for 1 March 2023.
On 25 March 2022, Argentina submitted a third request to extend its mine clearance deadline. The request was granted by the Twentieth Meeting of the States Parties in November 2022, and a new deadline set for 1 March 2026.
On 11 March 2025, Argentina submitted a fourth request to extend its mine clearance deadline. The request will be considered by the Twenty-Second Meeting of the States Parties in December 2025.
Annually and no later than 30 April, each State Party is to update information covering the previous calendar year. The latest Article 7 reports for this State Party can be found on this page.
Each State Party is to take all appropriate legal, administrative and other measures, including the imposition of penal sanctions, to prevent and suppress any activity prohibited to a State Party under this Convention undertaken by persons or on territory under its jurisdiction or control.
Argentina has reported having established national implementation measures or that it considers existing legislation to be sufficient.
