Since 1997, the UN General Assembly has adopted a “Resolution on the Implementation of the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-personnel Mines and on Their Destruction”.

The State not party has indicated,
“Azerbaijan supports the philosophy, purpose objective of the Convention and continues to make certain contributions to the implementation of the Convention’s objectives. Azerbaijan has also consistently voted in favour of the resolution on the implementation of the Convention at the United Nations General Assembly. Azerbaijan will consider joining the Convention in the context of complete demining of conflict affected territories and full restoration of the regional security. (…) Azerbaijan is committed to work towards a world free of anti-personnel mines and stand ready to support the international efforts contributing to this important goal (Intersessional Meetings, 22 June 2022)

In 2022, the then-Convention President H.E. Alicia Arango Olmos of Colombia and the Special Envoy on Universalization HRH Prince Mired Raad Zeid Al-Hussein met with H.E. Yashar T. Aliyev, Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN in New York to discuss the Convention and its norms.
